As part of the REDI4HEAT project, a dynamic workshop brought together over 50 participants for a session filled with inspiration, knowledge sharing, and practical solutions for advancing the energy transition at the local level. Hosted by Energy Cities, the event adopted a world café format that encouraged peer-to-peer learning and interactive discussions among city representatives, experts, and stakeholders.

Exploring Real-World Success Stories

Five expert speakers from across Europe presented innovative projects that showcased how cities—regardless of their size—are actively contributing to a sustainable energy future. Participants rotated among discussion tables, where speakers facilitated in-depth conversations, allowing attendees to explore different strategies and challenges firsthand.

The session covered diverse topics including inclusive citizen engagement, municipal empowerment, local energy storage, EU policy compliance, and the role of national frameworks in enabling or hindering local progress. Speakers shared insights from cities such as Arnhem, Poreč-Parenzo, and from projects like ESCALATE and REDI4HEAT, offering practical examples and transferable solutions.

Tools for Action: REDI4HEAT’s Knowledge Sharing Center

Participants were introduced to two key resources from REDI4HEAT:

  • The Transition Toolbox, a practical suite of tools for local authorities;
  • The Knowledge Sharing Center, a digital platform showcasing best practices and resources, including an assessment of National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) across the EU.

Takeaways and Next Steps

The workshop concluded with a strong message: local energy transitions are not only necessary but already happening—and they can be accelerated through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and smarter policy support. REDI4HEAT’s focus countries were invited to explore the national capacity-building programs available through the project, aiming to strengthen local readiness for decarbonization in heating and cooling.
